Chlamydia
A Better Sex Definition: Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease (or STD) caused by a parasitic microorganism. Most women do not show physical symptoms of a chlamydia infection, making it an extremely serious sexually transmitted disease since it is a major cause of pelvic inflammatory disease. Since it is often without symptoms, people may be lead to think it is not serious. When symptoms are present, both women and men may experience painful urination and discharge. Symptoms may disappear in a month in a majority of people. This is the cause of so many cases in which it continues untreated. Treatment is absolutely necessary to prevent infertility, ectopic pregnancies in women, and an infection in the epididymis within the scrotum for men. Treatment consists of a single dose of azithromycin or seven days of oral treatment with tetracycline or doxycycline. If the infection returns, treatment must be repeated for a longer period. Sexual partners must be treated concurrently to prevent re-infection.
