Contraceptive Diaphragm
A Better Sex Definition: Contraceptive diaphragm is a thin rubber hemisphere on a flexible ring placed at the cervix to hold spermicide in place as an aid in pregnancy prevention. A diaphragm sits in place behind the pubic bone and behind the cervix at the upper end of the vagina. Diaphragms are specifically sized and fitted, and instructions for proper use are given by a medical care provider. It is sized from approximately 2 to 4 inches measured in millimeters, depending on the size of the upper vagina. Spermicides, which must always be used with a diaphragm are available without prescription at a pharmacy. The typical effectiveness rate in pregnancy prevention is 80 percent. If a partner uses a condom during fertile days, the effectiveness can reach almost 100 percent.

To use a diaphragm correctly, follow the directions enclosed with the brand and style prescribed. In general, a teaspoonful of spermicide is placed into the cup. The rim is squeezed together by pressing the rim firmly between the thumb and the third finger.
