Erectile Dysfunction
A Better Sex Definition: Erectile dysfunction is the inability of a male to have or sustain an erection for intercourse, or for masturbation. Medical professionals or sex therapists treating erectile dysfunction may identify physical and/or psychological causes or psychological conflicts. Some physical causes include having diseases such as diabetes or multiple sclerosis, experiencing hypertension, nerve damage in some types of pelvic surgery, or an accident resulting in spinal cord or pelvic injury. Smoking constricts the blood vessels and is a factor in erectile difficulties. Hypertension, anticonvulsive, anti-arrhythmic, anti-depressive and anti-anxiety drugs and other drugs that affect the nervous system may also be a cause of erectile difficulty. In older men, possible lowered blood circulation in the penis may be a cause of dysfunction. If a study of erectile activity during sleep shows no erectile function, the assumption is made that the cause is physical.

Psychological causes include sexual guilt, anxiety, fear, depression, and trauma or unresolved abuse experiences. If an erection is possible for masturbation, but not for intercourse, the basis for the dysfunction may be psychological.

Physical causes often lead to psychological responses and treatment must address both areas. The main behavioral treatment for non-physically based erectile difficulty is sensate focus exercises under the supervision of a sexuality-trained therapist or medical care provider. Other treatment options for erectile dysfunction include vacuum device therapy, oral medications, injection therapy, transurethral therapy and a surgical implant.

Even if a physical problem cannot be solved there are now solutions to erectile difficulty. Use of medication or therapy devices may act as a bridge technique while psychological factors are treated.
