Kaplan
A Better Sex Definition:Whereas Masters and Johnson proposed a four-stage model of sexual response, Helen Singer Kaplan developed a three-stage model in 1979 consisting of 1.) desire, 2.) excitement, and 3.) orgasm. Her model made it convenient for therapists to classify sexual dysfunctions involving desire (low or absent drive), excitement (such as problems with erection in the male or lubrication in the female), and orgasm (such as premature ejaculation in the male or inability to reach orgasm in the female).

Helen Singer Kaplan, M.D., Ph.D., was a pioneer in sex therapy and made major contributions to the field until her untimely death due to breast cancer in 1995. In 1970 she founded the Human Sexuality Program at the Payne Whitney Clinic of New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center - the first such program in a U.S. medical school. In 1974, her major work, The New Sex Therapy, revolutionized the field of sex therapy by integrating behavioral an psychoanalytic theory and methodology into the treatment of the sexual disorders.

Dr. Kaplan was one of the originating editors of The Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy. Much of her writing and teaching was drawn from records of the more than 7,000 cases she treated in her extensive private practice. She published many important books, including:
The Evaluation of Sexual Disorders
The Sexual Desire Disorders
The New Injection Treatment of Impotence
How to Overcome Premature Ejaculation
Sexual Aversion, Sexual Phobias, and Panic Disorders
Disorders of Sexual Desire
