Herpes
A Better Sex Definition: Both Herpes Simplex virus 1 and Herpes Simplex virus 2 may infect the genitals, the skin around the rectum or the hands and may be transmitted to other parts of the body, such as the eyes. Genital herpes also begins with itching, tingling or soreness. Blisters develop on the penis, the vulva, in the vagina, or in or around the anus. They break and form sores that heal in about ten days. Antiviral drugs taken orally or applied as a cream lessen the symptoms. Lymph nodes may become enlarged and tender. The first outbreak is accompanied by fever and illness. Treatments do not cure herpes, but shorten outbreaks. Sexual exposure to a carrier or an infected person is usually the source of a case of genital herpes. The individual may not be aware of his/her ability to infect a partner.

Learning preventative techniques will help an adult avoid outbreaks of herpes. Identify the initiating event by keeping a health journal. Protecting the lips from direct sunlight by wearing a wide brimmed hat, or by using a strong sunscreen will reduce chances of an outbreak of herpes. Avoid activities and foods that cause flare-ups. Be aware of the effect of emotional stress, fever or illness and other triggers. Persons with frequent outbreaks may benefit from taking lysine, a product available at a health foods store, to improve the immune system.

For persons with HIV infection, or others with impaired immunity, herpes outbreaks may be severe, spread, persist, or resist treatment. Serious complications may include infection of the brain, the spinal cord, or nerves in the body.

Simplex I: One of several related viruses: Among them, Herpes simplex I and II responsible for cold sores, cornea sores and genital herpes, the herpes zoster virus which causes chicken pox and shingles, and the Epstein-Barr virus responsible for infectious mononucleosis (
