FAQ / Help for Digital Rentals

Q. What is a digital rental?

A. A digital rental allows you to watch our DVD’s immediately, without having to wait for it to be shipped. Once you purchase a digital rental, you can watch the movie online in the privacy of your own home using your computer, either viewing on the monitor or attached to a television set. Digital rentals allow you to try-before-you-buy and also eliminate the need to store DVDs in the home or files on your computer.

Q. Are there any requirements or restrictions to watch digital rentals?

A. You must be at least 18 years old to view our digital rentals. You must be watching from a location that permits the viewing of sexually explicit adult material. In order to view your digital rental in a secure environment, you must have an account on our website. You will be prompted to log in to your existing account or create one during checkout.

Q. How do I purchase a digital rental?

A. You can buy a digital rental the same way that you would buy a DVD, or any other product on our website. Simply browse to find the movie you want and if it is available for digital rental, you will see that purchase option on the movie’s page. Simply select the “Digital Rental” option for the length of time you desire, and add it to your cart. Once you check out, your rental will be available for viewing.

Q. Where do I watch my digital rental online?

A. After checking out, the order confirmation page will provide a link to watch your movie online. You will also receive this information in your order confirmation email. If you have an account with Better Sex, you will be able to access any digital rentals purchased through the My Account page.

Q. I just purchased a digital rental but I don’t have time to watch it right now. Will the time between now and when I can watch the movie be deducted from my rental period?

A. No. Your rental period does not begin until you start watching the movie. Once you press play, your rental period will start to count down.

Q. I just purchased a digital rental. How long do I have to wait before I can watch it?

A. Upon checking out and confirming your order, your digital rental will be available immediately.

Q. Do I have to download anything?

A. No. You do not need to download any software or the movie itself in order to watch digital rentals. You may need to install a third party plugin if your movie player is not up to date but nothing else is required to be downloaded to view digital rentals.

Q. How will I know when my rental period is up?

A. You will be able to see how much time is available on your rental on the video player page (via access link) as well as within the My Account area of the website.

Q. Who do I contact if I’m having problems with digital rentals?

A. You may email us at customerservice@bettersex.com or call our customer service at 800-955-0888.

Q. How many times can I watch my rental?

A. You may watch your rental as many times as you’d like during the rental period. Once your rental expires, you will need to rent the movie again if you’d like to watch more.

Q. Why is the movie I want to watch not available for digital rental?

A. Currently only select movies are available for digital rental, as we have just started providing this as an option to our customers. As customer interest grows and as movies are converted to the digital format, we will add the digital rental option to each available movie. We hope to provide all movies as both a digital rental and a DVD in the near future.

Q. Why are some movies more expensive to rent than others?

A. New and “premium” movies cost slightly more than others. Once a movie is no longer considered new, the price will be reduced.

Q. I bought a digital rental as well as another product on the website. My order total was enough to qualify me for free shipping but I was still charged. What gives?

A. Because we do not have to physically ship the digital rental, its purchase price does not count toward offers of free or reduced shipping. You must meet the purchase requirements for such offers with shippable goods only in order to qualify.

Q. I have a promotion code that is supposed to give me a discount. When I try to check out, the code will not apply the discount to my digital rental. Why?

A. Certain promotional offers are currently available for shippable goods only. When we supply discounts that apply to digital rentals, that will be notated in the offer. However, digital rentals do not qualify toward threshold-driven offers such as "Spend $24 and Get A Free Gift!" or "Free Shipping at $59".

Q. What are the system requirements to watch digital rentals?

A. REQUIRED: Pentium 550, 256 MB of RAM, 50 MB of free space, Windows XP, Windows Media Player 9.0 with DRM Update Enabled, Broadband Internet Connection (Dial-up not supported as the site requires a large amount of bandwidth), Internet Explorer 5.0+, Windows Media Player 9.0 or 10.0

RECOMMENDED FOR BEST PERFORMANCE: Pentium 4 or AMD 2.0 Ghz, 1.0 GB RAM, 100 MB of Free Space, Windows Vista, High-Speed Internet Connection (cable/DSL/T1), Monitor capable of displaying 1024x768 resolution, Internet Explorer 7.0, Windows Media Player 11.0

Notice for MAC users: During the initial release of the Digital Rental feature our system only supports Windows environments. But, there are workarounds that you can implement if you are using a different Operating System such as on a MAC. Every new Mac lets you install Windows XP and Vista and run them natively, using a MAC built-in utility called Boot Camp. Setup for multiple Operating Systems is simple and safe. After you’ve completed the installation, you can boot up your Mac on either Mac OS X or Windows.

There is another option available if you want to run Windows and Mac applications concurrently, without rebooting, you can install Windows using VMware, Parallels, or any of the others Virtual Machine software available for the MAC.

Q. I was able to watch a movie before but now it will not play. I keep getting an error message. How do I fix this?

A. This is a side effect of caching on your PC to speed up your browsing experience. There are two work-arounds that you can use to resolve this issue:

Disable Caching

To Do This:

  • 1. At the IE menu bar, select Tools
  • 2. Then select Internet Options
  • 3. Then at the middle of the pop-up, in the Temporary Internet files section, select Settings
  • 4. At the top of the pop-up, change the “Check for newer versions of stored pages:” to “Every visit to the page”
  • 5. Then press ok on the pop-ups

Clean up the cache

To Do This:
  • 1. At the IE menu bar, select Tools
  • 2. Then Internet Options
  • 3. Then at the middle of the pop-up, in the Temporary Internet files section, select “Delete Files”
  • 4. Then press "OK" on the pop-ups

      Q. The movie plays, but there are many pauses, and Windows Media Player displays a "buffering" message. What’s wrong?

      A. The player is probably experiencing network congestion. This means that there is not enough available bandwidth to stream the selected file. When you are using a TCP connection, the data in the player's buffer is used to supplement the stream until the buffer is used up. As soon as the buffered data is gone, the player pauses, replenishes the buffer, and then resumes playing by using the new buffer to supplement the playback stream bandwidth. This cycle continues until network conditions improve. Try again when the network is less congested. Another option is to make sure that the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is the only protocol that is selected in the Options dialog box. To set this option, open Windows Media Player, click Options on the Tools menu. This option reduces buffering, but it has the adverse effect of dropping data if there is high congestion or insufficient bandwidth. If you are located behind a firewall, you may not be able to use UDP as your protocol. Another option is to select a lower bandwidth for the Windows Media Player. Open Windows Media Player, then on the top left of the application, right-click where it says Windows Media Player and select Options. From the Options tab you will want to select Performance. Once the Performance tab is open you will see the "Connection speed" section. Select "Choose connection speed" and select a slower connection speed from the drop down box. Under the same Performance tab, you will see the "Network buffering" section. Select "Buffer" under "Network buffering" and change the box to "30 seconds of content" (60 seconds is the maximum).

      Q. While watching, the movie flipped upside down and became tinted green. Why?

      A. This is the result of a known bug in early versions of Windows Media Player when combined with certain video card drivers. Please ensure you are using the most recent versions of Windows Media Player, DirectX and the latest drivers for your video card (available from the manufacturer of your computer or video card.) Also, Microsoft has issued a program patch that may solve the problem for you. Click on this link and download the patch and install following the Microsoft instructions. This should take care of your problem. Please note: you will need to restart your computer after downloading this patch.

      Q. I am getting an error message from Windows Media Player indicating a “problem with digital rights management” or a need to “individualize DRM folder”.
